OBJECTIVES
By the end of the module, the participants will:
- understand the relationship between water, sanitation and hygiene in a given context
- understand that a technique is not “good” or “environmentally friendly” in absolute terms because everything depends on the context
- think about which alternative techniques would be appropriate in their operational contexts
- be familiar with the concept of eco-sanitation
- be aware of the advantages of eco-sanitation techniques and their field of application
- be aware of the genuine health risks linked to re-using excreta and of the appropriate precautions to take
CONTENT: (can be adapted depending on the length of the course)
- returning to and preserving natural cycles (water cycle, nutrient cycle)
- case studies of WASH responses in protracted crisis situations (refugee / IDP camps) : 1) in an arid context and 2) in a more humid context with a high water table
- role plays (for example, as part of the case study exercises)
- eco-sanitation theory (definitions, field of application, techniques) - re-using grey water and excreta in agriculture
- methodology for taking the environment into account in WASH programmes
PRE-REQUISITES
- Fluent in French (spoken and written).
PARTICIPANTS: (depending on the length of the module)
- Aid sector professionals who manage projects (e.g. Programme Coordinators, Heads of Projects in humanitarian organisation, etc.) and technical focal points.
- Masters students in Humanitarian Action
