Seminar for Dialogue and Capacity building of local and regional authorities in the Mashrek in the development and local governance fields, Amman (Jordan), 24-25 September

What role should local governments have in fragile states in crisis? This question, which has been highlighted in many of our evaluations in Haiti, Afghanistan and numerous African contexts, is back at the top of the agenda due to the crises in Syria and Iraq. These municipal authorities and local bodies are effectively in the front line in hosting refugees and IDPs, and often have to put up with the consequences in the long term until the crises are resolved. Over two days, representatives of these front line bodies from Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon and Syria will be discussing with each other and with practitioner-researchers, like Groupe URD, in Amman.

This event, organized by the PLATFORMA network and Cités Unies France, will be an opportunity to discuss the challenges of both governance and managing public services in highly volatile contexts.
