Training course: “The Participation of Affected People in Humanitarian Action”

The participation of affected people is now widely recognized as an essential part of humanitarian action. But despite this recognition in theory and principle, the application of participatory approaches remains difficult and unsatisfactory in the field. Groupe URD will be running a training course on this subject from 22 to 26 October 2012, in Plaisians (Drôme provençale, South of France).

The participation of affected people is now widely recognized as an essential part of humanitarian action. Several studies have shown that participation helps to improve situation assessments, adapt project strategies to contexts more effectively, increase accountability to the affected population and make project impact more sustainable. Participation is the key to establishing mutual respect and trust between humanitarian actors and the people affected by a crisis.

Despite this recognition in theory and principle, the implementation of participatory approaches remains difficult and unsatisfactory in the field. Indeed, the development and implementation of a strategy which is adapted to operational contexts and to the organization requires a specific positioning and skills and the ability to use a certain number of tools.

Groupe URD has conducted in-depth research on this topic, including an international study carried out in partnership with ALNAP between 2002 and 2004 in six different emergency response contexts and the publication in 2010 of the Participation Handbook for Humanitarian Field Workers (available in paper format and online in French, English or Spanish).

If you want to improve your implementation of participatory approaches in programmes or in your organisation, if you want to learn about new tools, analyse your own participatory practices or if you are looking to adapt your approach to the specific context of humanitarian aid, this intensive training course is for you. Participants will be aid professionals, and the course, which will run from 22 to 26 October at Groupe URD headquarters, will bring structure and renewed impetus to your participation activities.
