This is a six-month research project in partnership with the Spanish institute, IECAH (Instituto de Estudios sobre Conflictos y Acción Humanitaria), a member of ALNAP, which conducts research into conflicts and humanitarian action.
The project is financed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AECI) and includes four activities linked to the quality of humanitarian action:
- Review of Quality practices amongst Spanish humanitarian actors;
- Conference on quality in humanitarian action;
- Dynamic COMPAS® training;
- Translation of the book, ‘Evaluating humanitarian action’ (ALNAP, 2001) and the Dynamic COMPAS® tutorial.
The review conducted within Spanish NGOs was very instructive. The principle findings can be read in the executive summary (in English). The full report is in Spanish.
These findings were officially presented in Madrid on September 14, 2007 to an audience of representatives from the main humanitarian organisations in Spain.
The training course on the Quality COMPAS/Dynamic COMPAS method and software for managing quality and information on humanitarian projects, which took place from the 12th to the 15th of November 2007, was also a great success. Participants included representatives from some of the main Spanish NGOs (Cruz Roja Española, Ayuda en Acción, Médicos del Mundo, Farmamundi, Médicos Sin Fronteras) as well as freelance consultants and academics. The course was organised around a case study which gave participants the opportunity to apply quality management in a realistic context and to use the Quality COMPAS.
