Food security - Nutrition

Though, in theory, the planet is capable of feeding all its inhabitants, food insecurity is growing in many parts of the world. In many cases it is being made worse by crises (socio-natural disasters, armed conflicts, etc.). How can humanitarians be more effective in this area, whether it is in rural or urban contexts?

Food security is the result of a combination of factors: food needs to be available in sufficient quantities, people need to have access to it and they need to be able to use it, which is dependent on a number of factors such as good health and having the means to prepare it.

More than 70% of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas. Pauperisation has increased the rural exodus and expanded the number of people living on the periphery of cities. More than ever, farming and food security, which are essential to prevent malnutrition amongst the poorest people, are being affected by the consequences of crises: population displacement, reduced access to resources, poor living conditions, security problems, etc.

Groupe URD’s research and evaluations on this topic focus on the following areas:

  • Understanding and analysing vulnerabilities in rural and urban contexts: What needs to be done to make the most of an affected population’s intrinsic coping mechanisms and resilience? Issues studied include the role of women and the links between food insecurity and drug cultivation.
  • Needs analysis methods and tools: How can assessment tools be improved, in particular looking at “farming systems analysis”.
  • Anticipating food crises: What can be done to anticipate crises and to mitigate their effects on food security?
  • Nutrition and food security in emergency and mid-term responses: How should an emergency response be carried out to reduce the possibility of long-term food aid dependency? How can nutrition-related strategies be incorporated into multi-sector approaches (health, water and sanitation)? How can HIV/AIDS be taken into account in food security programmes?
  • Agricultural and nutrition in post-crisis and reconstruction contexts.
