Humanitarian donors mobilising for a more environmentally-responsible system

An important study on the integration of the Environment in the humanitarian sector, “Environment and Humanitarian Action – Increasing effectiveness, sustainability, and accountability”, was presented to the public on 23 June during the 2014 United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) conferences in New York. The study, which was commissioned by the Good Humanitarian Donorship Initiative, a humanitarian donor coordination initiative, states that there has been a sharp rise in awareness amongst humanitarian donors about the need to improve the integration of the environment in aid practices. The study was organized by the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit and was carried out by ProAct Network and Groupe URD. It establishes a precise picture of current donor strategies, policies and practices, promotes innovative approaches such as the Environmental Markers, and underlines the challenges which remain. 12 recommendations are made to the humanitarian community to establish a more environmentally-responsible system.
