Urban Simulation Workshop, on 5-6 November 2015 in London

The multiplication of natural disasters and an ever-increasing urban population have forced organizations to rethink the way they prepare and respond to the needs of affected communities in urban settings. The key difference between the traditional rural and urban systems is the existence of one or more local administration, of a vibrant private sector, of a stronger civil society, and of a broad-range of other urban stakeholders.

This workshop, organized by ALNAP, will begin by documenting current practices of understanding and working with urban stakeholders through a pre-simulation questionnaire (mandatory for participation). During the two-day workshop, participants will participate in a role-play simulation as part of an NGO responding to an urban crisis. Participants will be led through a number of activities in a simulated urban response, where they will reflect on preparedness, response and recovery activities and the ways humanitarians engage, understand and work with local stakeholders in urban areas.
