Understanding the risks to adapt more effectively

Heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, floods, storms…

The summer of 2026 was marked by massive wildfires, extreme temperatures and exceptional weather events. In France, the summer of 2026 was the hottest on record since measurements began in 1900. Three heatwaves followed one another, whilst soil drought and numerous wildfires characterised the season. In Bordeaux, temperatures exceeded 40 °C on several occasions.

These events illustrate the risks to which regions are exposed and the need to be better prepared for them. Resilience Month aims to promote a better understanding of these risks, their consequences and ways to reduce their impact.

The programme

Throughout October, a wide range of events will be taking place across the metropolitan area’s local authorities: talks, walks, workshops, serious games and other activities. These provide a practical and accessible way to explore climate risks and adaptation options.

In particular, these events encourage people to gain a better understanding of the region’s vulnerabilities, to comprehend the effects of climate change and to discover solutions for strengthening our ability to cope with extreme weather events.

As part of this, Groupe URD will be taking part on Friday 23 October in a participatory conference entitled “Strengthening social ties through local infrastructure”, described as follows:

‘In the face of increasing uncertainty, the resilience of communities is measured not only by the strength of their urban and technical infrastructure, but also by the strength of their social ties. Mutual aid networks form the invisible framework that protects our societies. Sometimes informal, sometimes organised, these social infrastructures enable us to anticipate, withstand and even absorb the effects of a disruption or crisis. How do social ties function in the event of extreme events? How can we strengthen these ties and foster civic engagement through a network of local social infrastructures?”
