On December 14, 2024, Cyclone Chido struck the Mayotte archipelago. This disaster served as a powerful wake-up call regarding the many structural challenges affecting France’s 101st department. This study analyzes the institutional response and the mechanisms of citizen-led mutual aid that were implemented before, during, and after the cyclone struck. Furthermore, this study also offers a critical analysis of the management of a humanitarian crisis within national borders and seeks to identify useful lessons for the optimal management of future humanitarian crises, which, as we know, are increasing in frequency and intensity and no longer spare any continent.Laurent Saillard
