Understanding risks (and their underlying factors) is essential in order to develop operational and organizational strategies that allow populations to recover and make development programmes sustainable.

Groupe URD has been commissioned to carry out a study by UNDP and UNICEF Dakar. The objectives of the study are:

  • To look into the different analysis tools that exist, what they are used for, their weaknesses and their strengths;
  • To identify areas where the different risk analysis tools might be complementary;
  • To establish the basis for a discussion about adopting a common approach to risk analysis between development, humanitarian and state organisations conducting operations in the Sahel.

The results of the study were presented by Groupe URD during a workshop organized by UNDP in Dakar in March 2016. This workshop brought together the main UN agencies present in the Sahel (WFP, FAO, UNICEF, OCHA, etc.) with the aim of adopting a common approach to analyzing risks, vulnerabilities and resilience in the Sahel.
