The Foundation for Studies and Research on International Development (FERDI) is an independent think tank whose principal mission is carry out research to influence international debate about major development issues. It is particularly active on issues related to the effectiveness of development, sustainable development and global governance.

FERDI has commissioned Groupe URD to carry out a study on pastoralism in the Sahel in connection with the work done by its Sahel Department, which examines the implementation and effects of different development plans and policies, with the aim of reinforcing their impact on people and targeted sectors of activity.

The study will aim to promote endogenous conflict management mechanisms in pastoral areas. It will also look at the conflict dynamics that have emerged with the rise of radical groups, the fact that they have taken control of predominantly pastoral territories, and how farmers and governments in the region have reacted. And lastly, it will aim to identify ways to improve understanding of these areas.
